We are Moving!

Not only are we moving but we are going off grid!!!!

Yep , that's right! In a month we will be living on our land with no electricity and for now no running water. (We plan to drill a well soon after getting there but it does take time)

I am so excited! This has been 2 years in the making  and it's finally here!

Don't think that because we have no electricity that we will be suffering. We won't be.
We will be using our generators for an hour or so  a day to run our computer (didn't think I'd move and leave you, did you? ) and we can watch dvds or tv on the computer just like we do now.
We have plenty of oil lamps  for light. We have looked into other options as well but we will get those later.
We will be cooking on a propane stove  and utilizing an old fashioned ice box- found on craigslist- for a "fridge". Since they don't make ice blocks anymore we will simply have to buy  bags of ice frequently until we come up with an icehouse and we will be using a camping toilet and shower for the bathroom. We have experience with this already .

My laundry system is going to be this baby-

Until the well is built we will be hauling water from our rain barrels and buying bottled water. We will conserve as much as possible! We have downsized our wardrobes so we don't have 1000 outfits each to make things easier.

Heat, since we are expecting a great deal of wet and cold starting in 2 weeks, will be from a wood stove. We have propane heaters in mind too, if we decide to go that way.

We don't need to worry about keeping cool right now but when we do we will be using the methods Rose Petal talks about on her blog HERE

As for little things, like COFFEE and phone service, we will be using a french press, and cell phones (duh!)

Now for another BIGGIE, for 9 people we will be living in 350  sq feet!! Yep that's tiny but we will make it work. We will be staying in the "little house" til we build our bigger house".

I am so excited!! I have made notebook after notebook of plans and I am finally going to get to use them!!

Any questions?

updated to add- we chose Sprint wireless internet service instead of satellite- more gigabytes for less money. easy !  and we have a wood stove in the process of being bought right now! We also have some LED lights from Tractor Supply that we plan on getting as well.

Hey Tami, When we lived "off the grid" we used a kerosene fridge. It worked really well.
Wishing you all the best in your new home!

So happy for you! I will pray for you as you step out on this journey. We did this years ago while restoring our home..and have had several tornadoes that led us to live in a tent in the yard while rebuilding. Looking forward to hearing updates!!

Sounds like a wonderful adventure! I just had a week without water -- the well died. You really don't need as much water as you think. I made up a "shower" out of a garden sprayer (new) and a small shower nozzle set. Pump it up with some warm water and you're all set. The most I needed was 1-1/2 gal. for a shower, washing and conditioning my hair. The nice thing is that the shower nozzle I found had a shut off so you spray down, soap up and spray down again.

SO EXCITING! I wish my husband would reconsider this. I use the least power I can & even burn oil lamps many nights.

Blessings from Ohio...Kim<><

Wow, sounds like an adventure! When we moved onto our farm, I wasn't set up with laundry and hand-washed for 3 months. All I can say is I hope you have a wringer! How I drooled for one of those!! :) We too are trying to rely less on electricity. Our stove is propane and we started using a french press or camping percolator, also dumped the toaster oven and heat up or toast on the frying pan once we are done frying our eggs… Solar water heaters are also a blessing! Hope your endeavor is full of blessings and I look forward to hearing about your experiences.

Tami,
Would you please consider sharing this post on the 'EOA' link-up this Wednesday? I think it would be so encouraging for others who might be faint of heart to consider doing this? Blessings as the Lord leads you !!!

If you have family or friends...or a church freezer available, you can freeze your own blocks of ice. ;)
I just bought an outdoor cooking set up from Forgotten Way Farm.....they are running a sale on Grandpa Jakes Cooker right now.
350 sq feet....I am looking forward to following your adventures. :). You may want to consider hammocks. ;)
