WARNING:NOT PLEASANT

the reason i bring these things to your attention is that we as homemakers are gatekeepers or guardians of our homes and we need to know what is out there attacking our families. for my family- we will never use an apple product becuz of this.

Apple approves 'Baby Shaker' for App Store

April 22, 2009 11:07 AM PDT

by Tom Krazit

If you needed any further proof that Apple's App Store approval process is horrifyingly out of whack, consider one of the latest additions to the App Store: Baby Shaker.

A successful game of Baby Shaker, now available on the App Store.

A company called Sikalosoft is currently selling a $0.99 iPhone application called Baby Shaker, as of Monday. The object of Baby Shaker is to stop the incessant crying of an infant pictured on screen by violently shaking the iPhone, at which point two red "x" marks appear over the baby's eyes. "See how long you can endure his or her adorable cries before you just have to find a way to quiet the baby down!" reads the sales pitch for Baby Shaker.

Jennipher Dickens, who founded a nonprofit organization in 2007 after her son Christopher was injured from being shaken by his father, brought the new application to our attention after reading about it on Krapps, an iPhone application review site. I downloaded it from the App Store this morning to verify it existed and worked as described.

"As a mother of a child who was violently shaken at 7 weeks old, causing a severe brain injury, and the founder of a national organization for Shaken Baby Syndrome prevention (as well as the communications director for a national organization helping children with brain injuries), I don't have to tell you how much this horrifies me!!!" she wrote in an e-mail.

When the App Store was first announced in March 2008, Apple said it would vet every single application submitted to the App Store and approve or reject applications based on its internal standards. So, as Apple approaches the one billionth download of App Store applications, let's review what Apple has decided you're allowed to do, and what you're not allowed to do, with iPhone applications.

You are not allowed to have swear words in your application.

You are not allowed to develop applications that could potentially harm existing or future Apple businesses.

You are allowed to develop applications that break App Store rules if you work for one of the most important companies on the planet, whose CEO happens to sit on Apple's board of directors.

You are allowed to simulate infanticide.

Apple representatives did not respond to requests for comment on Baby Shaker

The week of Obama’s inauguration, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi boldly advanced the idea that, in order to stimulate the economy, mothers should have fewer babies. Pelosi defended her plan to make tax-payer subsidized child prevention an important part of the $825 billion economic stimulus package, explaining that “contraception will reduce the cost to the states and to the federal government ... no apologies. No. We have to deal with the consequences of the downturn in our economy.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made this remark on January 25 during an exchange with George Stephanopoulos on ABC’s “This Week.” For more details, see: “Pelosi: Birth control will boost economy,” January 26, 2009, wnd.com.

My sign at the next teaparty will read I AM NANCY PELOSI'S WORST NIGHTMARE.

Gloria Feldt, former president of Planned Parenthood, praised her book, noting that those who embrace Psalm 127 “twist religion” to leave “women barefoot, pregnant, and powerless.” Barbara Ehrenreich, a radical, pro-marxist feminist who writes for the New York Times, also endorsed it, stating that the Quiverfull movement seeks to “reduce women to the status of slave breeders.” Other endorsers of Joyce’s book refer to the rising number of couples who embrace the blessing of children as “disturbing” and “terrifying.

For My Texas Readers

i found this on a blog today
This is from a Texas Legislative Update blog post, an excerpt of which I read in Adam McManus' daily e-mail today.

Infanticide Bill Passes House Committee-I’m Not Kidding, It Really Did

Unbelievable, yes, absolutely unbelievable. HB 3318 has passed successfully out of the House Criminal Jurisprudence Committee. HB 3318, by Jessica Farrar (D-Houston), the Infanticide Bill, is a terrible assault on babies. Currently, if you murder a child under the age of six (6), it is Capital Murder, punishable by life in prison or the death penalty. This bill, HB 3318, reduces the crime of murder against a child the age of 0-12 months, to only a state jail felony, with a maximum of 2 years and a minimum of 180 days. So the mom that murdered her child could be set free with only six months time served.

Why? Because a woman proves that her “judgment was impaired as a result of the effects of giving birth or the effects of lactation following the birth.”

Utterly outrageous. We already have incomplete protection for unborn children, and the assault, under this bill, will extend to babies once they’re born and given them less protection. Apparently to Rep. Jessica Farrar and some members of the Criminal Jurisprudence Committee, life outside of the womb is no longer worthy of the highest protection.

Texas would be the first state in the United States to have such a law.

HB 3318 is now in the Calendars Committee and could be voted on any day, one step away from full House approval.

Call the Calendars Committee today tell them to vote NO on HB 3318!!

!! WHO: Only 7 Swine Flu Deaths NOT 152 !!
Posted April 29th, 2009 by Michael Nystrom

From the Sydney Morning Herald:

A member of the World Health Organisation (WHO) has dismissed claims that more than 150 people have died from swine flu, saying it has officially recorded only seven deaths around the world.

Vivienne Allan, from WHO's patient safety program, said the body had confirmed that worldwide there had been just seven deaths - all in Mexico - and 79 confirmed cases of the disease.

"Unfortunately that [150-plus deaths] is incorrect information and it does happen, but that's not information that's come from the World Health Organisation," Ms Allan told ABC Radio today.

Hmm.... So where is that information coming from, pray do tell?

Just a Note

In 1976 ONE person in the US died from swine flu. THIRTY PLUS died from the vaccine.
Interesting!

there were 13000 cases of TB in the U.S last year- was there a panic?

just some things to think about.

swine flu crisis? maybe not!

going hand in hand with :

SNAP ANALYSIS-Flu could boost gov't intervention further
27 Apr 2009 12:13:00 GMT
Source: Reuters
By Peter Apps, Political Risk Correspondent

LONDON, April 27 (Reuters) - The spread of a possible flu pandemic could see an increase in already heightened levels of government intervention in economies and financial markets as a result of the global financial crisis.

In the short term, it might serve to give governments an easy justification to impose protectionist measures that could further stifle slumping trade flows.

Doctors and officials around the world are moving to contain the spread of a swine flu outbreak that has already killed more than 100 people in Mexico and spread to countries around the world, with markets already reacting nervously.

"At the moment, markets are still making the assumption this will not be that serious," said Dresdner Kleinwort emerging foreign exchange strategist Jon Harrison.

"But if it were to turn out much worse you would see a rise in government spending and government intervention. This sort of crisis would be too big for anything other than governments."

Governments have poured unprecedented amounts of money into capital markets in recent months supporting, and in some cases nationalising, banks to try and stimulate lending as economic output and trade around the world dried up particularly after the demise of Lehman Brothers in September.

Those moves have largely reassured markets but also left investors uneasy and watching politicians and political forces much more closely as their influence on markets deepens.

If the flu crisis were to worsen, analysts say markets could see a repeat of some of the interventions that worried investors last year, from the introduction of controls to contain capital flight to the sort of stock market suspensions Russia tried to use to halt capital flight after the Georgia war.

Mexico's peso has already come under pressure from the outbreak, falling 3 percent in electronic trade on Monday although there are as yet no suggestions that Mexican markets will be closed as a result of the crisis.

Dresdner's Harrison said most exposed would be fledgling emerging economies that might see mass capital flight if the virus hit them hard. Those reliant on tourism or travel might be particularly vulnerable.

Several countries including Iceland, Ukraine and Nigeria have tightened capital controls to limit the impact of the global financial crisis.

TRADE RESTRICTIONS?

John Raines, deputy director of political risk at London-based consultancy Exclusive Analysis, said even if swine flu was controlled and no more destructive than the SARS outbreak, it would likely further hit trade particularly in agricultural products.

"At the very least, I would expect them to use it as a way of supporting their domestic pork industries," he said. "Trade is always the first to go and it is an easy excuse for protectionist measures. But if it became a true pandemic, affecting millions, then all bets are off."

However, trade restrictions prompted by public health emergencies like the swine flu outbreak are permitted under international law, if they are only maintained as long as necessary, White & Case law partner Brendan McGivern said.

"As long as the measure you take is based on sound science, it is perfectly permitted within the rules," McGivern said. "I would view this as a bit different than crude protectionism."

Totally unexpected "black swan" events such as the outbreak of the First World War -- when investors suddenly had to adapt to the prospect of global conflict in a matter of weeks -- have sometimes prompted draconian intervention and have had a seismic economic impact.

Stock markets from Wall Street to Vienna closed for up to five months in July 1914, while the global economy suffered a liquidity crisis generally seen as much worse than that seen last year as lending largely ceased.

Book Review Time Again

What can I say about this beautiful book? Does the beauty come from the actual book itself, with the gift cover and the wonderful illustrations that are on every page? Does the beauty come from the documentation of Christ's life? Does the beauty come from the author's words, added to each section, giving us ways to think that we might not have thought ofto begin with?
Ithink the beauty comes from all of these things. Max Lucado is a very talented author and I always come away with a new thought to a story I have heard before. That's what is so wonderful about the Bible. God is constantly "re-using" it for us ~smile~ And this book is one of the ways He does that. Treat yourself to this.

They watch Obamanation grow in unbridled power
Americans Largely Silent as Their Nation is Systematically Destroyed
Author
JB Williams Bio

broken watermains
By JB Williams Tuesday, March 24, 2009

After trillions in taxpayer debt has been foolishly poured into the bottomless black hole of leftist wealth redistribution programs, under the guise of economic “stimulus” or “stabilization” legislation, the new “ONE World” government running Washington DC announces; Geithner, Bernanke Call for New Wind-Down Powers After AIG… and the people still sit silent as they watch Obamanation grow in unbridled power.

Geithner Asks Congress for even Broader Power to Seize private Firms as the average American stumbles through their daily routine as if nothing is happening. Canada Free Press managing editor Judi McLeod writes No cheerleader for propping up greenback at G20 summit asking, “Is the table being set for One World Government rather than speeding the recovery of the worldwide recession at next week’s G20 London summit?”

Obamanation has taken the nation from a trillion in debt to over $4 trillion in debt in the first sixty days, with even more federal spending promised, which could put the nation $10 trillion in debt before the 2010 mid-term election cycle. Amnesty for illegals and ACORN led redistricting will make 2010 and beyond a moot point.

Still, beyond the movement to mail tea bags to members of congress or file another legal demand for proof of Obama’s constitutional eligibility for the office he holds, both of which are like whistling in the breeze, the people remain largely silent.
Threatened with a Soup Line Existence

The American people would never trade personal freedom for the false promise of federally redistributed free-stuff under some ill-fated socialist experiment, unless they were first threatened with a soup line existence.

And so it shall be…

50% of their life savings and 30% of their home values have already evaporated into thin air. National unemployment is driving towards double digits as home foreclosures continue to mound.

With their backs against the wall, confused by a daily diet of media manipulated headlines aimed at scaring the public into submission, convinced that our nation’s complex woes demand a solution far too complicated for the average peasant to comprehend, the people find themselves in a state of terminal paralysis.
Incompetent Evil in Charge

The same people responsible for the many disasters now surrounding every American household, were elected in 2006 and 2008 to fix what they broke. Instead of reversing course and placing their faith in the principles of freedom, they are installing more of the same failed entitlement policies that created the problem and they are doing so at a fever pace.

The folks currently in charge of the nation don’t like anything at all about the nation that once was. They have a very different vision for America, one based on redistribution of free-stuff, not equal access to freedom.

At the foundation of personal freedom is the right to make your own decisions, invest and risk your own capital, own your own property and keep that which you are willing to work and sacrifice to earn. It’s called economic freedom, aka capitalism.

But capitalism is public enemy #1 in America today, thanks to decades of class warfare and the art of division via social envy, all for purpose of political gain.

Life, Liberty and the right to individually define and pursue Happiness has been replaced with the right of some to take from others against their will, in the name of a greater common good, better defined as the entitlement mentality.
The Change Agents New World Dictionary

Old concepts have been redefined. Capitalism is now referred to as Fascism. Personal ambition is now called greed. Those who seek access to other people’s rightful earnings are called charitable, and those who demand a right to only that, which they earn, are called greedy.

It isn’t just the words that have new definitions. The concepts have new meaning as a result.

Words like socialism and communism no longer have a negative connotation attached to them. Most Americans have no idea what they are anymore, or why they don’t want to find out the hard way.

The concept of liberal interpretations limits the meaning of words only to one’s individual imagination. The Constitution means only what someone imagines it to mean. If the shoe doesn’t quite fit, a new definition will solve the problem.
What are Americans Waiting For?

I don’t know what it will take to wake up the average American, but whatever it is, it hasn’t happened yet…

The people currently stocking up on food, water, guns and ammo in record numbers, causing shortages in all the above at the retail level, are clearly awake and anticipating something, but what? Meet the “extremists...”

The people still trying to get a court somewhere in America to hear the arguments concerning the most secretive corrupt president in US history, have been awake for a long time. Meet the “birthers...” But they continue to have trouble waking anyone else up, including in the so-called halls of justice.

Is it a bankrupt dollar and a new international currency that will get their attention? - A North American Union? - An ACORN Army on their doorstep? What will be the final straw that breaks the proverbial camel’s back?

I don’t have the answer… Frankly, I expected the people to revolt long before now. Clearly, I had underestimated the depth of apathy and tolerance for anti-American nonsense in the average modern American. But then, so did our nation’s founders, whom I’m certain are rolling over in their graves in disgust by now.
The Silent Consent Continues

Nobody knows for how long or at what expense, but so far, the people remain silent and Washington continues to profitably interpret that silence as broad-based consent.

At this late date, I have no idea what will wake up the average American or how they might react once finally awake and ready to engage in self-governance. However, I am sure about two things…

When they finally do awake, they are going to be really angry…
And, the anti-American left won’t let up until then…

The clock isn’t just ticking. Time has already run out as of the 2008 election. Washington DC is currently dismantling America, individual right by individual right, in an unprecedented massive multi-faceted assault on all things American.

If you are not familiar with the Democratic Socialists of America or their legislative branch, the Congressional Progressive Caucus, I strongly suggest that you take time to learn them well. They are in charge of your nation. This is who the average American is up against and they are a very well funded and organized enemy of the state.

You will not be able to take your country back without putting these two organizations out of business. The longer you wait, the tougher the battle, the higher the price.

Clearly, the organizational skills of the average American are equal only to that of the stumbling bumbling Republican Party. Fragmented, distracted and disorganized, the people are no match for the leftist juggernaut running roughshod in DC.

The people are lost, so they are losing… The most complex problems require the simplest of solutions. But the average American is so baffled by a daily diet of elitist B.S., that they cannot even see daylight… – When all else fails, return to the basics!

Here’s to the average American waking up in time! - Good luck!

socialism here we come

Obama’s leap to socialism
By Dick Morris
Posted: 04/21/09 05:21 PM [ET]
President Obama showed his hand this week when The New York Times wrote that he is considering converting the stock the government owns in our country’s banks from preferred stock, which it now holds, to common stock.

This seemingly insignificant change is momentous. It means that the federal government will control all of the major banks and financial institutions in the nation. It means socialism.

The Times dutifully dressed up the Obama plan as a way to avoid asking Congress for more money for failing banks. But the implications of the proposal are obvious to anyone who cares to look.

When the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) intervention was first outlined by the Bush administration, it did not call for any transfer of stock, of any sort, to the government. The Democrats demanded, as a price for their support, that the taxpayers “get something back” for the money they were lending to the banks. House Republicans, wise to what was going on, rejected the administration’s proposal and sought, instead, to provide insurance to banks, rather than outright cash. Their plan would, of course, not involve any transfer of stock. But Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) undercut his own party’s conservatives and went along with the Democratic plan, ensuring its passage.

But to avoid the issue of a potential for government control of the banks, everybody agreed that the stock the feds would take back in return for their money would be preferred stock, not common stock. “Preferred” means that these stockholders get the first crack at dividends, but only common stockholders can actually vote on company management or policy. Now, by changing this fundamental element of the TARP plan, Obama will give Washington a voting majority among the common stockholders of these banks and other financial institutions. The almost 500 companies receiving TARP money will be, in effect, run by Washington.

And whoever controls the banks controls the credit and, therefore, the economy. That’s called socialism.

Obama is dressing up the idea of the switch to common stock by noting that the conversion would provide the banks with capital they could use without a further taxpayer appropriation. While this is true, it flies in the face of the fact that an increasing number of big banks and brokerage houses are clamoring to give back the TARP money. Goldman-Sachs, for example, wants to buy back its freedom, as do many banks. Even AIG is selling off assets to dig its way out from under federal control. The reason, of course, is that company executives do not like the restrictions on executive pay and compensation that come with TARP money. It is for this reason that Chrysler Motors refused TARP funds.

With bank profits up and financial institutions trying to give back their money, there is no need for the conversion of the government stock from preferred to common — except to advance the political socialist agenda of this administration.

Meanwhile, to keep its leverage over the economy intact, the Obama administration is refusing to let banks and other companies give back the TARP money until they pass a financial “stress test.” Nominally, the government justifies this procedure by saying that it does not want companies to become fully private prematurely and then need more help later on. But don’t believe it. They want to keep the TARP money in the banks so they can have a reason and rationale to control them.

The Times story did not influence the dialogue of the day. People were much more concerned with the death of 21 horses at a polo match. Much as we will miss these noble animals, we will miss our economic freedom more.

Iknow it's long but....

Since I changed our eating habits I have been studying a lot and I found this. I had to share.

MSG: Is This Silent Killer Lurking in Your Kitchen Cabinets

MSG, additive, processed foodby Dr. Mercola

A widespread and silent killer that’s worse for your health than alcohol, nicotine and many drugs is likely lurking in your kitchen cabinets right now.[1] “It” is monosodium glutamate (MSG), a flavor enhancer that’s known widely as an addition to Chinese food, but that’s actually added to thousands of the foods you and your family regularly eat, especially if you are like most Americans and eat the majority of your food as processed foods or in restaurants.

MSG is one of the worst food additives on the market and is used in canned soups, crackers, meats, salad dressings, frozen dinners and much more. It’s found in your local supermarket and restaurants, in your child’s school cafeteria and, amazingly, even in baby food and infant formula.

MSG is more than just a seasoning like salt and pepper, it actually enhances the flavor of foods, making processed meats and frozen dinners taste fresher and smell better, salad dressings more tasty, and canned foods less tinny.

While MSG’s benefits to the food industry are quite clear, this food additive could be slowly and silently doing major damage to your health.

What Exactly is MSG?

You may remember when the MSG powder called “Accent” first hit the U.S. market. Well, it was many decades prior to this, in 1908, that monosodium glutamate was invented. The inventor was Kikunae Ikeda, a Japanese man who identified the natural flavor enhancing substance of seaweed.

Taking a hint from this substance, they were able to create the man-made additive MSG, and he and a partner went on to form Ajinomoto, which is now the world’s largest producer of MSG (and interestingly also a drug manufacturer).[2]

Chemically speaking, MSG is approximately 78 percent free glutamic acid, 21 percent sodium, and up to 1 percent contaminants.[3]

It’s a misconception that MSG is a flavor or “meat tenderizer.” In reality, MSG has very little taste at all, yet when you eat MSG, you think the food you’re eating has more protein and tastes better. It does this by tricking your tongue, using a little-known fifth basic taste: umami.

Umami is the taste of glutamate, which is a savory flavor found in many Japanese foods, bacon and also in the toxic food additive MSG. It is because of umami that foods with MSG taste heartier, more robust and generally better to a lot of people than foods without it.

The ingredient didn’t become widespread in the United States until after World War II, when the U.S. military realized Japanese rations were much tastier than the U.S. versions because of MSG.

In 1959, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration labeled MSG as “Generally Recognized as Safe” (GRAS), and it has remained that way ever since. Yet, it was a telling sign when just 10 years later a condition known as “Chinese Restaurant Syndrome” entered the medical literature, describing the numerous side effects, from numbness to heart palpitations, that people experienced after eating MSG.

Today that syndrome is more appropriately called “MSG Symptom Complex,” which the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) identifies as "short-term reactions" to MSG. More on those “reactions” to come.

Why MSG is so Dangerous

One of the best overviews of the very real dangers of MSG comes from Dr. Russell Blaylock, a board-certified neurosurgeon and author of “Excitotoxins: The Taste that Kills.” In it he explains that MSG is an excitotoxin, which means it overexcites your cells to the point of damage or death, causing brain damage to varying degrees -- and potentially even triggering or worsening learning disabilities, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Lou Gehrig’s disease and more.

Part of the problem also is that free glutamic acid is the same neurotransmitter that your brain, nervous system, eyes, pancreas and other organs use to initiate certain processes in your body.[4] Even the FDA states:

“Studies have shown that the body uses glutamate, an amino acid, as a nerve impulse transmitter in the brain and that there are glutamate-responsive tissues in other parts of the body, as well.

Abnormal function of glutamate receptors has been linked with certain neurological diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease and Huntington's chorea. Injections of glutamate in laboratory animals have resulted in damage to nerve cells in the brain.”[5]

Although the FDA continues to claim that consuming MSG in food does not cause these ill effects, many other experts say otherwise.

According to Dr. Blaylock, numerous glutamate receptors have been found both within your heart's electrical conduction system and the heart muscle itself. This can be damaging to your heart, and may even explain the sudden deaths sometimes seen among young athletes.

He says:

“When an excess of food-borne excitotoxins, such as MSG, hydrolyzed protein soy protein isolate and concentrate, natural flavoring, sodium caseinate and aspartate from aspartame, are consumed, these glutamate receptors are over-stimulated, producing cardiac arrhythmias.

When magnesium stores are low, as we see in athletes, the glutamate receptors are so sensitive that even low levels of these excitotoxins can result in cardiac arrhythmias and death.”[6]

Many other adverse effects have also been linked to regular consumption of MSG, including:

* Obesity
* Eye damage
* Headaches
* Fatigue and disorientation
* Depression

Further, even the FDA admits that “short-term reactions” known as MSG Symptom Complex can occur in certain groups of people, namely those who have eaten “large doses” of MSG or those who have asthma.[7]

According to the FDA, MSG Symptom Complex can involve symptoms such as:

* Numbness
* Burning sensation
* Tingling
* Facial pressure or tightness
* Chest pain or difficulty breathing
* Headache
* Nausea
* Rapid heartbeat
* Drowsiness
* Weakness

No one knows for sure just how many people may be “sensitive” to MSG, but studies from the 1970s suggested that 25 percent to 30 percent of the U.S. population was intolerant of MSG -- at levels then found in food. Since the use of MSG has expanded dramatically since that time, it’s been estimated that up to 40 percent of the population may be impacted.[8]

How to Determine if MSG is in Your Food

Food manufacturers are not stupid, and they’ve caught on to the fact that people like you want to avoid eating this nasty food additive. As a result, do you think they responded by removing MSG from their products? Well, a few may have, but most of them just tried to “clean” their labels. In other words, they tried to hide the fact that MSG is an ingredient.

How do they do this? By using names that you would never associate with MSG.

You see, it’s required by the FDA that food manufacturers list the ingredient “monosodium glutamate” on food labels, but they do not have to label ingredients that contain free glutamic acid, even though it’s the main component of MSG.

There are over 40 labeled ingredients that contain glutamic acid,[9] but you’d never know it just from their names alone. Further, in some foods glutamic acid is formed during processing and, again, food labels give you no way of knowing for sure.

Tips for Keeping MSG Out of Your Diet

In general, if a food is processed you can assume it contains MSG (or one of its pseudo-ingredients). So if you stick to a whole, fresh foods diet, you can pretty much guarantee that you’ll avoid this toxin.

The other place where you’ll need to watch out for MSG is in restaurants. You can ask your server which menu items are MSG-free, and request that no MSG be added to your meal, but of course the only place where you can be entirely sure of what’s added to your food is in your own kitchen.

To be on the safe side, you should also know what ingredients to watch out for on packaged foods. Here is a list of ingredients that ALWAYS contain MSG:

Autolyzed Yeast Calcium Caseinate Gelatin
Glutamate Glutamic Acid Hydrolyzed Protein
Monopotassium Glutamate Monosodium Glutamate Sodium Caseinate
Textured Protein Yeast Extract Yeast Food
Yeast Nutrient

These ingredients OFTEN contain MSG or create MSG during processing:[10]

Flavors and Flavorings Seasonings Natural Flavors and Flavorings Natural Pork Flavoring Natural Beef Flavoring
Natural Chicken Flavoring Soy Sauce Soy Protein Isolate Soy Protein Bouillon
Stock Broth Malt Extract Malt Flavoring Barley Malt
Anything Enzyme Modified Carrageenan Maltodextrin Pectin Enzymes
Protease Corn Starch Citric Acid Powdered Milk Anything Protein Fortified
Anything Ultra-Pasteurized

So if you do eat processed foods, please remember to be on the lookout for these many hidden names for MSG.

Choosing to be MSG-Free

Making a decision to avoid MSG in your diet as much as possible is a wise choice for nearly everyone. Admittedly, it does take a bit more planning and time in the kitchen to prepare food at home, using fresh, locally grown ingredients. But knowing that your food is pure and free of toxic additives like MSG will make it well worth it.

Plus, choosing whole foods will ultimately give you better flavor and more health value than any MSG-laden processed food you could buy at your supermarket.

Approaches to Courtship / Betrothal

The Differing Teachings on Courtship & Betrothal

by David Crank

Disclaimer: Interpreting the teachings of many others has been necessary for comparison in this article. I have tried to be very careful to not misrepresent these teachings and to present them as fairly as possible. However, my interpretations and presentation will inevitably be imperfect. It was not feasible for me to validate my conclusions with the many teachers discussed here, so I apologize in advance for any possible misinterpretation or fault in my explanation. I will be glad to publish any corrections or clarifications from these teachers.

Introduction

WHAT is Christian courtship? What is Betrothal? Well it depends somewhat on whom you ask. Definitions and guidelines differ from teacher to teacher. A lot of the same points are made, but significant differences remain. The purpose of this article is to acquaint you with some of the differences, so that you can better choose for your own family. I will compare the teachings of nine different authors and speakers: Bill Gothard, Jonathan Lindvall, Joshua Harris, John Thompson, Douglas Wilson, Jeff & Marge Barth, Eric & Leslie Ludy, Jeff & Danielle Myers, and Dr. Don Raunikar. This is not an exhaustive list of folks teaching in this area, but these are some of the main ones and those whom I have had opportunity to research.

A Little History

Where did this teaching originate? I can only tell you what I have pieced together from brief mentions in a number of books and speaker presentations. Bill Gothard was teaching a "biblical" dating back in the early 1970s, that advocated all young men being approved by the girl’s father before ever having a date, and again before marriage was ever discussed with the girl. Gothard indicates he was influenced in his early adulthood by a Christian speaker (perhaps even the same one Elisabeth Elliot mentions that influenced her during her Bible School days).

Jonathan Lindvall was influenced by Gothard’s teachings and went a step further in defining something called "courtship", with which he challenged the youth group he was leading. Gothard then appears to have picked up some of Lindvall’s ideas, and began teaching "courtship" as opposed to dating. From there I see many cross influences between the different teachers. Josh Harris, the Myers, and the Ludys appear to have all learned some from each other. Harris was also significantly influenced by Elisabeth Elliot’s book (Passion & Purity) and by Michael Farris’ book (The Homeschooling Father) having a chapter devoted to courtship. Lindvall later revised his teachings to urge replacing courtship with betrothal, and some other teachers adopted at least part of this new teaching.

Definitions

The following teachers have defined "courtship" or "betrothal" as follows:

Gothard: Courtship - "A father’s agreeing to work with a qualified young man to win his daughter for marriage."

Lindvall: Courtship - "A romantic relationship between a young man and woman in which both were of marriageable age, had the full blessing of their parents, and were seriously contemplating marriage."

Thompson: Courtship - A stage/period in Scriptural Romance prior to Betrothal. Courtship constitutes the process of investigating a person with marriage in mind: evaluating character, values, beliefs, practices, interests & life purpose to ensure a godly match. There is to be no physical contact and no developing of romance/emotional ties during this period. Parents first investigate, followed by more detailed investigation by the young people themselves, generally within family settings.

Harris: Courtship – "Dating with a purpose; friendship plus possibility; and romance chaperoned by wisdom." A relationship with a clearly defined direction. "A reformed version of dating under the supervision of parents between a man and a woman who are ready for marriage in the near future."

Myers: Courtship - consists of three main elements: 1) accountability to parents and other trusted adults; 2) building each other’s character rather than focusing on physical attraction; and 3) waiting to develop serious relationships until you are ready to get married.

Raunikar: Courtship – a relationship / process begun with full approval of both sets of parents (or an accountability couple if not possible) with the intent to consider marriage, and to become acquainted through family and group activities.

Barth: Courtship - "a process by which a mature young man or young lady of marriageable age, along with their parents, seek to discern their God-given life partner. It involves the parents or authorities on both sides and yet allows for feelings and discernment from both of the young people involved."

Lindvall: Betrothal – An irrevocable and publicly announced commitment to marriage, only terminated for infidelity, during which the cultivation of a romantic relationship is permitted. Betrothal is instigated by the young man and woman with the full approval of parents. No physical contact occurs until after the wedding.

Thompson: Betrothal - A stage/period in Scriptural Romance, following the stage of Courtship. It is a binding commitment to marry, approved & supervised by the fathers, attested by a bridal provision (bride price / dowry) and by witnesses and/or a document. It follows a careful investigation that occurs during the Courtship period.

Note the above similarities and differences. Concerning courtship: Parental authorization and guidance appears in all to varying degrees. A purpose of considering marriage is present or implied in all. A degree of readiness for marriage is stated or implied. Some stress investigation while others stress the cultivation of romance. Lindvall’s definition of betrothal defines a binding commitment to marry, without a period of courtship investigation or any romantic involvement preceding. In Thompson’s, betrothal is a stage that follows courtship.

Major Areas of Difference

There are numerous minor differences but only a few major ones. The most obvious major difference is that between "courtship" and "betrothal", yet even here the root of the difference comes down to the same few key areas that differentiate one courtship teaching from another. These include: (1) The degree and form of parental involvement; (2) How to choose whom to court/betroth; (3) the timing of romantic emotions; and (4) the timing of forms of physical contact.

(1) Parental Involvement

While universally acknowledging the importance of a parental role, the role advocated varies widely. Some present courtship / betrothal as primarily youth led with the advice and consent of parents (Harris, Ludy, Myers, Raunikar). Others see courtship/betrothal as more of a parent led process with parental approval being primary and parents significantly directing the courtship process (Thompson, Lindvall, Barth, Wilson, Gothard).

The more youth-led approaches are prone to treat parents as only one set of many counselors, who sometimes should be ignored in favor of other wiser, or more godly counselors. When parents are non-Christians, some argue that no parental approval should be required concerning either the person selected or the timing of marriage.

With the parent-led approaches, parental approval is usually sought whatever the spiritual condition of parents. Parents are encouraged to talk to other parents of "prospects," and sometimes initially propose a courtship to their son or daughter. However, none teach that a courtship or betrothal should take place without the agreement of the young people involved. Also, to the extend parents are able and willing, they are expected to do some initial investigation of the "candidate" and his or her family prior to agreeing to a courtship. Thereafter, they actively guide and supervise the courtship process, including ending the courtship when it seems advisable.

(2) Choosing Whom
to Court / Betroth

The differences in choosing relate to the degree to which one seeks direction from the Lord, versus makes the decision solely on the basis of careful investigation and wisdom. For example, the Barths put much emphasis on seeking to hear from the Lord, but also validating guidance through careful investigation and not rushing to a decision. On the other hand, Thompson does not believe God provides guidance in matters such as these, and so would have you solely rely on the teachings of Scripture and the application of Scriptural principles by wisdom.

Barth, Lindvall, Ludy, Gothard and Raunikar seem to envision that God has a best/perfect choice for your mate and encourage a lot of prayer and seeking God’s will in making this choice. Thompson, though advocating wisdom to make the best choice over the second best choice, doesn’t seem to believe that God has picked a certain one for you (or at least not one that you need seek His will concerning). Wilson’s position is less clear, but seems to be somewhere between these two.

Those advocating more of a parent-directed courtship encourage looking for mates through other families the parents become acquainted with – families similar to your own with many of the same beliefs and convictions. Those teaching more of a youth-directed approach speak mostly of finding candidates at Bible school, at church groups for college or singles, or at work or ministry activities.

(3) Timing of Romance / Emotions

All of the teachers are concerned about emotional purity as well as physical purity. The ideal is to avoid giving yourself emotionally to someone other than your future spouse. The differences concern when and under what conditions emotional involvement should be allowed or even encouraged. Lindvall is very concerned about courtships where strong emotional bonds develop and then the courtship is broken, so his solution is betrothal – with absolutely no emotional involvement or even opportunity for emotional involvement, prior to an irrevocable commitment to marry.

Thompson similarly would restrict emotional involvement until betrothal, but would risk unapproved emotional involvement occurring during the courtship process. Though the intent is to guard hearts and hold back emotionally until after the decision is made, this does not always work.

Other teachers would allow or even encourage a gradually growing emotional involvement during courtship. They encourage great care to not allow emotions to become engaged too early in the process, both so that they will not cloud one’s judgment, and so that chances of defrauding (if the courtship is called off), are kept to a minimum. To avoid the risk of defrauding in a courtship relationship, they advise: 1) being very sure before starting a courtship or letting it get beyond a casual friendship; and 2) not letting emotions and expectations proceed ahead of the commitment level and the likelihood of marriage. Once the decision to marry is close, the young man may be encouraged, and helped by the girl’s father, to "win her heart," prior to proposing marriage.

(4) Physical Contact

All are concerned about temptation in this realm and being careful not to stoke passions before their time. Also early physical involvement risks clouding ones judgment. Some, such as Thompson and Lindvall, urge absolutely no physical contact before marriage. Others seem to support the same but without so strong an insistence. Still others are more receptive to some physical shows of affection prior to marriage, while being careful not to encourage lust or temptation towards fornication.

Some allow the holding hands as early as the later stage of courtship, when a young man is seeking to win the young woman’s heart. Josh & Shannon Harris decided that holding hands and light hugs would be all right before marriage, but to delay and kissing or cuddling until after marriage. Harris urges couples to set their own boundaries wisely, considering that some may be more or less affected by different physical shows of affection. The Myers did something similar but decided to kiss for the first time at their engagement. Dr. Raunikar, in dealing with older and previously married couples, is less strict in his advice in this area, mentioning some possible kissing even prior to engagement.

Betrothal Teachings:
Lindvall’s Betrothal

Jonathan Lindvall teaches an approach that he calls betrothal. He believes this is the Biblical pattern and a much better safeguard against defrauding than courtship - whether due to the young people or the parents breaking off the relationship. Other teachers have not accepted this approach nearly so well as his earlier courtship teaching. The major objection is the absence of a period for the young people to get to know each other well, to thoroughly investigate each others beliefs and convictions first hand, or to develop any emotional attachment prior to a firm commitment to marry.

Most will grant that there are cases when a true courtship period is unnecessary. For instance, if the young people and their families have been close for a long time, there may be little need for much further evaluation, or for concern over whether the two will quickly grow fond of each other. However many, if not most, situations are otherwise. The young people may have had very little and only superficial contact. The parents may also be new acquaintances. A betrothal without opportunity to become well acquainted might prove a foolish decision. Before marriage decisions, many seek the confirmation that comes from a prior period of growing friendship and the beginnings of affection.

Those not supporting Lindvall’s ‘betrothal’, also point to the problem of a so-called irrevocable marriage commitment. A betrothal remains very revocable in reality, as it is not supported either in law or by strong tradition and ostracism. Even marriage is easily revocable in this country. Betrothing couples have been known to not marry, how ever much the betrothal was spoken of as irrevocable.

Betrothal is considered by some to be an overreaction to occasional defrauding problems within courtship. When a courtship is carefully chosen and wisely managed by parents, the risk of a breakup after much emotional involvement should be very slight. No method or set of rules can perfectly protect against defrauding. Do we not need to place our faith more in God than in a particular set of man-made rules?

Other teachers also disagree with Lindvall that his version of betrothal is more biblically supported than other courtship teachings. It’s true that the term "betrothal" appears in the Bible while the term "courtship" does not. However, "betrothal" is purely an English word used to approximate Hebrew and Greek biblical terms. Neither does a mere name make one approach more biblical than another. Little biblical guidance is available for the Hebrew practice of betrothal or virtually any information about what preceded it. Much is inferred from what is not said, and from those who have written about ancient customs. Inferences are drawn from a very limited number of examples – we don’t have guidance as to the full range of options God would approve.

Betrothal Teachings:
Thompson’s Courtship/Betrothal

John Thompson published an extensive series of eight articles entitled God’s Design for Scriptural Romance in Patriarch Magazine a few years ago. These are still available on the Internet at both Thompson’s site www.ChristianCourtship.com and at www.Patriarch.com). Thompson offers very complete lists of Biblical passages to consider, questions to ask potential suitors, and very detailed guidelines / rules for courtship and betrothal. His approach seems to be a synthesis between Lindvall’s betrothal with the courtship teachings of others. Like Lindvall, all emotional bonding is to occur after a binding commitment to marriage (betrothal). Unlike Lindvall, his approach includes a pre-betrothal courtship period for the purpose of the young people carefully investigating each other to determine if this would be a wise match. Thus this approach seeks to overcome many of the criticisms of both courtship and Lindvall’s betrothal.

However, it does not fully meet the objections to either of these. Those taking issue with Lindvall’s betrothal still see: 1) a reliance on an irrevocable commitment to marriage that in actual practice remains very revocable; and 2) a requirement for an irrevocable commitment at a point when affection for one another has yet to develop. Those supporting Lindvall’s approach will also point to the risk of emotional entanglement prior to betrothal due to the degree of interaction.

Thompson’s approach is also a bit unique in some other regards - that some support and others criticize. A key aspect of Thompson’s teaching is his approach to decision making, based on the teachings of Gary Friesen (Decision Making and the Will of God). Friesen’s teachings in this regard are fairly controversial, being well accepted by some and adamantly opposed by many others. The essence of these is that there is no "individual" will of God, only a "moral" will of God and a "sovereign" will of God. God’s sovereign will is secret and God’s moral will is 100% contained within the Scriptures. Therefore we should not seek or expect any direction from God in our daily life decisions, including such ones as a choice of occupation or a spouse. We are simply to make the best choices possible using wisdom and complying with Biblical commands and principles.

This viewpoint permeates Thompson’s teachings, as demonstrated in: the emphasis given to an exhaustively thorough evaluation (sounding at times like a Fortune 500 executive search, with arranging interviews and carefully checking references with church elders, family members and long term family friends), his web site for matching up like-minded families searching for mates for their children, and the absence of appeals to prayer, spirit leading, or any divine guidance. So the extent of your agreement or disagreement with this issue will impact how much you agree with Thompson.

Thompson’s approach also comes across to some as very rigid and inflexible, and perhaps too idealistic. Few allowances seem to be made for common differing conditions, for less than perfect circumstances, or for God choosing to work in slightly different ways.

He believes it is almost impossible to do courtship unless both young people are still living in their father’s home. Though it is a great advantage for both to still be at home, this has repeated been proven not to be a necessary condition – especially in the instance of a young man living and working away from his parent’s home. (See the example of our son Samuel’s courtship in Vol. 1 Issue 3.)

Thompson also appears to require chaperoning at all times, in every situation. Many other teachers encourage fathers to be reasonable, not making chaperoning an absolute requirement for every situation. Good judgment and a reasonable assessment of the young people and the relationship, might indicate chaperoning to be quite unnecessary for daytime trips running errands, traveling to a church ministry, etc. When the young people are clearly committed to purity and the risks of the situation appear very low, an inflexible chaperoning rule may be unnecessarily burdensome.

A less common aspect of Thompson’s teaching is the encouragement of a bride price/dowry. Douglas Wilson also teaches about this Biblical practice but applies it mainly to ascertaining the young man’s financial stability and ability to support a wife. Thompson takes this a bit farther – encouraging the exchange of a "bride price" at the time of betrothal. Much of his teaching on this comes from extra-Biblical sources concerning Hebrew culture, as he himself says that the term only appears four times in Scripture and in some confusing contexts.

Conclusion

So you see the decision to "do courtship" also requires some thought and prayer concerning just how you plan to do so. There is no need to decide all the details in advance. Actually that could prove foolish as it is impossible to anticipate all future conditions that properly should impact your approach. Yet you should at least consider the key issues and the arguments for and against them, remembering particularly that with sons, the girl’s father will likely have the final say as to the approach.

When parents speak to another family about courtship or betrothal, or when a young man and young woman speak of the same, they need to define just what they mean by these terms. Though certain principles are widely accepted as being a part of courtship or betrothal, the differences between teachings is still significant. Take the time to discuss the details before beginning on this road. Expect the other family to have a few different ideas than you may have. Normally the process is greatly defined by the girl’s family due to the special protective role of a father towards his daughter. Yet both families should discuss these matters with a spirit of humility and accommodation towards one another.

5 Reasons Why Christians Should Not Obtain a State Marriage License

by Pastor Matt Trewhella

Every year thousands of Christians amble down to their local county courthouse and obtain a marriage license from the State in order to marry their future spouse. They do this unquestioningly. They do it because their pastor has told them to go get one, and besides, "everybody else gets one." This pamphlet attempts to answer the question - why should we not get one?

1. The definition of a "license" demands that we not obtain one to marry. Black’s Law Dictionary defines "license" as, "The permission by competent authority to do an act which without such permission, would be illegal." We need to ask ourselves- why should it be illegal to marry without the State’s permission? More importantly, why should we need the State’s permission to participate in something which God instituted (Gen. 2:18-24)? We should not need the State’s permission to marry nor should we grovel before state officials to seek it. What if you apply and the State says "no"? You must understand that the authority to license implies the power to prohibit. A license by definition "confers a right" to do something. The State cannot grant the right to marry. It is a God-given right.

2. When you marry with a marriage license, you grant the State jurisdiction over your marriage. When you marry with a marriage license, your marriage is a creature of the State. It is a corporation of the State! Therefore, they have jurisdiction over your marriage including the fruit of your marriage. What is the fruit of your marriage? Your children and every piece of property you own. There is plenty of case law in American jurisprudence which declares this to be true.

In 1993, parents were upset here in Wisconsin because a test was being administered to their children in the government schools which was very invasive of the family’s privacy. When parents complained, they were shocked by the school bureaucrats who informed them that their children were required to take the test by law and that they would have to take the test because they (the government school) had jurisdiction over their children. When parents asked the bureaucrats what gave them jurisdiction, the bureaucrats answered, "your marriage license and their birth certificates." Judicially, and in increasing fashion, practically, your state marriage license has far-reaching implications.

3. When you marry with a marriage license, you place yourself under a body of law which is immoral. By obtaining a marriage license, you place yourself under the jurisdiction of Family Court which is governed by unbiblical and immoral laws. Under these laws, you can divorce for any reason. Often, the courts side with the spouse who is in rebellion to God, and castigates the spouse who remains faithful by ordering him or her not to speak about the Bible or other matters of faith when present with the children.

As a minister, I cannot in good conscience perform a marriage which would place people under this immoral body of laws. I also cannot marry someone with a marriage license because to do so I have to act as an agent of the State! I would have to sign the marriage license, and I would have to mail it into the State. Given the State’s demand to usurp the place of God and family regarding marriage, and given it’s unbiblical, immoral laws to govern marriage, it would be an act of treason for me to do so.

4. The marriage license invades and removes God-given parental authority. When you read the Bible, you see that God intended for children to have their father’s blessing regarding whom they married. Daughters were to be given in marriage by their fathers (Dt. 22:16; Ex. 22:17; I Cor. 7:38). We have a vestige of this in our culture today in that the father takes his daughter to the front of the altar and the minister asks, "Who gives this woman to be married to this man?"

Historically, there was no requirement to obtain a marriage license in colonial America. When you read the laws of the colonies and then the states, you see only two requirements for marriage. First, you had to obtain your parents permission to marry, and second, you had to post public notice of the marriage 5-15 days before the ceremony.

Notice you had to obtain your parents permission. Back then you saw godly government displayed in that the State recognized the parents authority by demanding that the parents permission be obtained. Today, the all-encompassing ungodly State demands that their permission be obtained to marry.

By issuing marriage licenses, the State is saying, "You don’t need your parents permission, you need our permission." If parents are opposed to their child’s marrying a certain person and refuse to give their permission, the child can do an end run around the parents authority by obtaining the State’s permission, and marry anyway. This is an invasion and removal of God-given parental authority by the State.

5. When you marry with a marriage license, you are like a polygamist. From the State’s point of view, when you marry with a marriage license, you are not just marrying your spouse, but you are also marrying the State.

The most blatant declaration of this fact that I have ever found is a brochure entitled "With This Ring I Thee Wed." It is found in county courthouses across Ohio where people go to obtain their marriage licenses. It is published by the Ohio State Bar Association. The opening paragraph under the subtitle "Marriage Vows" states, "Actually, when you repeat your marriage vows you enter into a legal contract. There are three parties to that contract. 1.You; 2. Your husband or wife, as the case may be; and 3. the State of Ohio."

See, the State and the lawyers know that when you marry with a marriage license, you are not just marrying your spouse, you are marrying the State! You are like a polygamist! You are not just making a vow to your spouse, but you are making a vow to the State and your spouse. You are also giving undue jurisdiction to the State.

When Does the State Have Jurisdiction Over a Marriage?

God intended the State to have jurisdiction over a marriage for two reasons - 1). in the case of divorce, and 2). when crimes are committed i.e., adultery, bigamy. etc. Unfortunately, the State now allows divorce for any reason, and it does not prosecute for adultery.

In either case, divorce or crime, a marriage license is not necessary for the courts to determine whether a marriage existed or not. What is needed are witnesses. This is why you have a best man and a maid of honor. They should sign the marriage certificate in your family Bible, and the wedding day guest book should be kept.

Marriage was instituted by God, therefore it is a God-given right. According to Scripture, it is to be governed by the family, and the State only has jurisdiction in the cases of divorce or crime.

History of Marriage Licenses in America

George Washington was married without a marriage license. So, how did we come to this place in America where marriage licenses are issued?

Historically, all the states in America had laws outlawing the marriage of blacks and whites. In the mid-1800’s, certain states began allowing interracial marriages or miscegenation as long as those marrying received a license from the state. In other words they had to receive permission to do an act which without such permission would have been illegal.

Blacks Law Dictionary points to this historical fact when it defines "marriage license" as, "A license or permission granted by public authority to persons who intend to intermarry." "Intermarry" is defined in Black’s Law Dictionary as, "Miscegenation; mixed or interracial marriages."

Give the State an inch and they will take a 100 miles (or as one elderly woman once said to me "10,000 miles.") Not long after these licenses were issued, some states began requiring all people who marry to obtain a marriage license. In 1923, the Federal Government established the Uniform Marriage and Marriage License Act (they later established the Uniform Marriage and Divorce Act). By 1929, every state in the Union had adopted marriage license laws.

What Should We Do?

Christian couples should not be marrying with State marriage licenses, nor should ministers be marrying people with State marriage licenses. Some have said to me, "If someone is married without a marriage license, then they aren’t really married." Given the fact that states may soon legalize same-sex marriages, we need to ask ourselves, "If a man and a man marry with a State marriage license, and a man and woman marry without a State marriage license - who’s really married? Is it the two men with a marriage license, or the man and woman without a marriage license? In reality, this contention that people are not really married unless they obtain a marriage license simply reveals how Statist we are in our thinking. We need to think biblically. (As for homosexuals marrying, outlaw sodomy as God's law demands, and there will be no threat of sodomites marrying.)

You should not have to obtain a license from the State to marry someone anymore than you should have to obtain a license from the State to be a parent, which some in academic and legislative circles are currently pushing to be made law.

When I marry a couple, I always buy them a Family Bible which contains birth and death records, and a marriage certificate. We record the marriage in the Family Bible. What’s recorded in a Family Bible will stand up as legal evidence in any court of law in America. Early Americans were married without a marriage license. They simply recorded their marriages in their Family Bibles. So should we.

(Pastor Trewhella has been marrying couples without marriage licenses for ten years. Many other pastors also refuse to marry couples with State marriage licenses.)

This pamphlet is not comprehensive in scope. Rather, the purpose of this pamphlet is to make you think and give you a starting point to do further study of your own. IT PASSED

UPDATE HR20-New Mother's Mandated Mental Health Test-JUST PASSED HOUSE!

I'LL HOMEBIRTH THANK YOU

Posted April 14th, 2009 by runforron

http://www.govtrack.us/co...

A sweeping government policy for all new births in the United States has just passed the House of Representatives and is now headed to the Senate. The Mother's Act, if passed, will mandate that all new mothers be screened by means of a list of subjective questions that will determine if each mother is mentally fit to take their newborn home from the hospital. Just imagine that after your child is born, you are told that you can't take them home since a multiple choice questionnaire wasn't answered correctly. Just imagine being told that the only way you can take your child home is if you or your spouse goes into treatment or on anti-depressants which we know causes psychosis, delusions, and even homocidal thoughts. It just doesn't make sense. Unfortunately, this bill is on a fast track--No public debate, no public disclosure of the broad impact on our society and that is why we need you to act now!

The Mother's Act violates our Constitutional right to privacy and your right to liberty and it is just outright dangerous. That is why we need you to help stop this. We urgently need you to call and email each Senator on the HELP Committee and tell them you STRONGLY OPPOSE the MOTHER'S ACT and that you are OUTRAGED that there was NO public debate or disclosure on the impact this would have on our society as a whole.

Send a letter by going here: http://salsa.democracyina...

Please call the following Senators on the HELP Committee and tell them that you want the Mother's Act to die in committee.

well we are done with school for today. Parker continued working in his Easy Grammar book and did some math in his Spectrum 4 book. He also read 1 chapter in his Helen Keller bio.
The girls worked on phonics and math too.i used the web to find worksheets for today.
We all sat together to read a section in the Bob Jones history book (about the Constitution).

We worked on color sheets for the day for the verses from Ephesians about putting on the whole armor of God. great discussion there.

Ben worked alone , doing math in Saxon, designing a totem pole for history- plus reading about them and the Great Plains- and doing creative writing. he still has a bible lesson about Genesis 5 awaiting him.

We do still have an art project on butterflies and a game to play to help enforce our learning about obedience but those are fun things so ......!

Psa 23:2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

Today I noticed something I had never noticed before, with this verse. He leads me to peace- but He doesn't force me to accept it. How many times have I sought a peaceful answer to my prayers and saw it it right in front of me but refused to accept it? No Lord it's not that easy. No Lord if that's the answer, well that's too easy or different than what I expected so that can't be it!
Yet He led me there.
Gee maybe His answer is better than mine! ~smile~ Maybe I should accept what He offers and see how His answer stacks up against mine. Gee what have I missed out on thru the years?!

The Great Eight

I was given the chance to review this book, The Great Eight by Scott Hamilton ,and since I was very interested in his story i jumped on the chance!

My review- a good book, a quick read, entertaining but not full of Scott's battle with cancer. Yes the book talks about it a bit but it wasn't the story I expected. It was more of a biograpghy of his early years (and what the Great Eight stands for)

All in all- I enjoyed the book but it wasn't what I expected. It seemed a little light on the details.

on to another birth story!
this time i'll talk about Andrew's!
My last birth before Andrew was Jamison, whose entire labor and delivery took 45 minutes. So I knew that this birth could go quick, too. On Tuesday my midwife did a test to see if I was likely to go into labor before 35 weeks. It was negative. On Wednesday, the day I turned 35 weeks, my water broke! Apparently she did the test wrong.
Anyway, back to that water breaking! I was standing in the middle of Walmart sorting thru my cereal coupons, right smack dab in the middle of the aisle, when I suddenly felt a huge amount of liquid pour down my legs and go straight into my shoes. I called for Michael who was on the next aisle. When he got to me I told him what happened, right as a woman pushing a cart full of groceries turned onto the cereal aisle. Remember, I was smack dab in the middle of the aisle! I couldn't move! I told Michael not to make me move and just let her think I was very rude by not moving my cart! ~smile I put my head down and looked thru my coupons so I could avoid her stare.
After she had left, we attempted to walk to the front door - did you know that it is approximately 38 miles from the cereal aisle to the front door of Walmart?! LOL anyway we FINALLY made it to the front door and Michael brought the car around and we went home. I called my midwife and she said to come on in. So we began the 45 minute trip to the hospital.
When we got there, my mw talked to the doctor who wanted to send me to Dallas - 2 and 1/2 hours away - since I was only exactly 35 weeks and some of you will remember I had been very ill during my pregnancy and there were concerns about Andrew's heart. My mw convinced the doctor that I needed to stay closer to home since I had six other kids and we were fairly new in town so we had no one to help out. She assured him that all the tests from Andrew's brain and heart doctors had looked excellent so far, so could we please try it here? He said yes.
Anyway, after my water breaking so dramatically, I sat in the hospital for 3 days with nothing happening! Praise God there was a Jon and Kate plus 8 marathon going on to keep me occupied.
At 2:00 in the morning I started labor! I labored completely alone - Michael was sleeping and the mw had told the nurses to stay out of my room because this wasn't my first time at the rodeo! She assured them that I knew what to do and if need be we would call them. She went home and I toughed it out alone ~smile~ i recited John 3:16 and Psalms 23 all thruout my labor. That's just what God gave me!
At 8:30 the doctor came in, checked me and said I was at 5, and then he,too, left me alone. Tho by now Michael was awake.
At 10:30 I was pushing Andrew's head out. Picture this- I was on the floor, on all fours, Michael was doing whatever he was doing and there were no nurses around. I told Michael to get over here and catch this baby! He bent down and got ready. Just as I began pushing the head, which Michael could already see, a nurse (Marsha) came into the room, she was horrified I was on the floor! Against my wishes, she helped lift me into the bed. Just as I lifted my leg to get in the bed, Andrew flew out and into Marsha's arms. She was stunned. I said "I told you it was time!"
The mw walked in right at that moment and said "Well, you didn't need me after all!"
She remarked on how pink he was- they had expected him to be blue due to the heart concerns- and how gorgeous he was . (all my babies are gorgeous- just a thing about them i guess !lol)
well the end to the story is that we ended up staying at the hospital a few more days to make sure Andrew was ok and he was! PERFECT! So home we went.

Tornado devastates small Arkansas town, killing 3

By JON GAMBRELL

MENA, Ark. (AP) - Battered residents of this western Arkansas city waited for daylight Friday to dig out from a "direct hit" by a tornado that killed three people, injured at least 30, and flattened homes and businesses.

The twister sliced through the Ouachita Mountains community shortly after 8 p.m. Thursday. The county sheriff described the sky turning green, while the airport manager said darkness fell quickly as the twister crossed the Oklahoma line 10 miles away.

"Me and the dog ran to the bathroom when we saw it on the TV," said Rick Lanman, the manager of the Mena Airport. "It was here in less than a minute."

Sirens warned the community for earlier storms north and south of town. When they sounded a fourth time, "experience was telling me that we were in trouble," said Lanman, who said he been through tornadoes before in Oklahoma and Illinois.

Before first light Friday, a convoy of trucks from electric utilities streamed into Mena. Their flashing yellow lights illuminated downed trees and buildings whose roofs and sides had been ripped away. Blue lights from police cruisers lit up debris downtown.

"It just looks like a war zone," Mayor George McKee said.

Prosecutor Tim Williamson said the storm uprooted 100-year-old trees and damaged Civil War-era homes that had been restored. He said the town once looked "pastoral" but added, "It's not anymore."

Emergency workers planned to go door-to-door Friday morning to account for the city's 5,700 residents. Firefighters would likely be needed to slice away fallen trees to clear a path.

"They'll have to cut in for us. It's going to be a long day," Polk County Sheriff Mike Oglesby told Little Rock television station KTHV.

Williamson said dispatchers at the county courthouse had been trapped inside immediately after the storm. He said the county jail was "uninhabitable" and efforts were being made to transfer inmates to nearby counties.

The twister tore the roof off a local community college building destroyed two businesses at the city's industrial park, Williamson said.

The violent weather was part of a system that caused damage throughout the South and parts of the Midwest. The National Weather Service said a woman was injured at Shreveport, La., when a tree fell onto her car during a tornado. Twisters also damaged homes east of Vinita and near Muse in Oklahoma and at Crossett in far southern Arkansas, near the Louisiana line.

As the storms moved east, hail and high winds were reported in Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi and Tennessee. Power was out in many parts of the region.

Authorities have not released the identities of those killed in Mena, a man and two women. One victim was found in a collapsed house, one in a Masonic lodge, and another in her front yard, Reeves said.

The 24 injured people were being treated at Mena Medical Center.

National Guard troops were patrolling the downtown area, and an overnight curfew was in effect as emergency crews dealt with ruptured gas lines, downed power lines, fallen trees and heavily damaged buildings.

Lanman, the airport manager, said his dog Milo was agitated when he arrived home from work Thursday, and that he kept a close eye on the weather as the storms crossed into western Arkansas from Oklahoma.

"We had one warning for a storm to the north of us and a warning for a storm to the south. We were on the very tip. We were at the right spot, I turned on the TV and, sure enough, there it was," Lanman said.

A state trooper in Mena called for assistance after his patrol car got stuck in the storm, pelted with debris and covered with power lines, state police spokesman Bill Sadler said.

"I'm in the middle of a tornado," Sadler said the trooper reported.

The sheriff said deputies reached five children who were in a house that was "basically turned upside down." They were taken to a hospital, he said.

Reeves said he had never seen such a powerful storm hit the tornado-prone region.

"Not in my life time," he said. "The last tornado we had to hit the city of Mena was in November 1993. This time we had significant structures (hit)."
